BACKGROUND
Genocide is the intentional destruction of a group of people. The first genocide in modern history was the decimation of the Armenians, but by far the most infamous was the Holocaust. The latter moved the world to cry, “never again.” Unfortunately, these words held little truth. Since World War II, genocide has reared its ugly head time and time again. In spite of genocide’s recognition by the United Nations as an international crime in 1948, it continues to claim the lives of millions. This is because the United Nations struggles to hold perpetrators accountable in international court. Oftentimes the accused refuse to affiliate themselves with the UN, so getting them to trial is nearly impossible- even with a warrant out for their arrest. Because of this, it’s our job as citizens of the world to stand up for victims and demand justice. Our voice is the final line of defense against genocide. Refuse to be silent.
